We advanced as close to the water as we could, and spread out our Army blanket. We slipped out of our clothes to our bathing suits beneath. My brother ran toward the water, and just then an ice-cream man passed. "Getcha ice cream!" he yelled. Ice cream, I thought, right here on the beach! The ice-cream man was halfway up the beach and heading toward the boardwalk. I ran after him, dodging people, kicking sand. Finally I reached him. "How much, mister?" I asked. "Ten cents today." "Ten cents! It's only a nickel on the block." "Well there ain't no blocks here, kiddo. This is the beach, and why doncha just look around." My mother would never spend a dime on one ice cream. I hung my head and started to walk back to our blanket.
