Most of us have some aspect of our lives we would rather keep private. However, sometimes other people need our information. For instance, doctors need accurate medical histories of their patients. Banks need financial information to issue credit cards or lend money. The government may need private information about persons applying for secret service jobs. As data about us are collected and computerized, the potential for abuse becomes greater. People are, or should be, wary of three kinds of abuse; information being collected without their knowledge; wrong information that cannot be corrected; information that is used for purposes other than the original ones.

Private information cannot be disclosed.

It goes without saying that we live in an information- oriented society.

Private information should be protected from illegal abuse.

Information should be used as freely as possible.
