| Personal qualities generally have either positive or negative connotations. Our attitudes toward such personal qualities are partly personal, partly social, and partly cultural. Some people also feel that gender plays a role, with some qualities being more positively valued by women than by men and vice versa. Such attitudes are not always static, and they can change with changing economic and social circumstances. In some places, during the 1970s, ambition was seen to be bad, and then, during the 1980s, it was seen to be good.
