Will you get more sick if you exercise while you have a cold? In one experiment, a team of researchers injected a group of fifty students with rhinovirus, and then had part of the group run, climb stairs, or cycle at moderate intensity for forty minutes every other day, while the second group remained relatively sedentary. They found that the exercise regimen neither eased nor worsened symptoms of the common cold. Several similar studies conducted elsewhere have found the same thing. Doctors refer to a good rule of thumb as the neck check. It's safe to exercise if you have only "above the neck" symptoms, like a runny nose or sneezing. If your symptoms are "below the neck"―a fever or diarrhea―you're better off sitting it out for a few days.
