I have always been excited by the opportunity to discuss with colleagues from every part of the world all kinds of professional issues, concerns for raising standards, developing professional profiles and the ability to speak a common professional language even when the actual barriers of language (or translation) intervene. I have been enormously stimulates by the opportunity to share ideas about the future on a global scale, as well as challenged by extraordinary commitment of colleagues in other countries. During a post IFLA three day conference in Bangkok, I was humbled by colleagues from Cambodia, Kosovo, Lebanon, Nicaragua, all coping with war-ravaged communities but determined to restore their libraries and bring books to children and their families.

필자가 국제회의에서 얻은 것들을 열거하고 있으므로 국제회의 참가가 주는 이점이 글의 주제다.
세계 각지의 동료들과 온갖 전문적 쟁점을 논의하고, 기준을 높이며, 언어 장벽이 있어도 공통의 전문 언어로 소통할 수 있다는 점, 지구적 차원에서 미래에 대한 생각을 나누며 자극받고 다른 나라 동료들의 헌신에 도전을 받는다는 점이 차례로 제시된다.
방콕 IFLA 회의에서 만난 캄보디아·코소보·레바논·니카라과 동료 이야기는 회의가 준 자극의 사례일 뿐, 전쟁과 도서관 자체가 주제는 아니다.
친구를 사귀는 기쁨이나 언어 장벽 극복은 글의 일부 소재에 지나지 않아 전체를 아우르지 못한다.
