공동해손(general average) 성립요건을 규정한 요크-앤트워프 규칙 Rule A의 원문은 intentionally and reasonably이므로 A에는 intentionally, B에는 reasonably가 들어간다.
즉 공동해손행위란 공동의 해상사업에 관련된 재산을 위험에서 보존할 목적으로 공동의 안전을 위하여 고의적이고(intentionally) 합리적으로(reasonably) 행해진 이례적인 희생 또는 비용일 때에만 성립한다.
따라서 고의성과 합리성이 동시에 충족되어야 하며, 우연히 발생한 손해나 불합리하게 과도한 처분은 공동해손으로 인정되지 않는다. 비고의적(unintentionally)이거나 불합리한(unreasonably) 희생을 넣으면 조문의 성립요건 자체가 무너진다.
