밑줄 친 “took the place of”(~을 대신했다)와 의미가 가장 가까운 것은 “were used instead of”(~ 대신 사용되었다)이다.
- “were moved together with”는 ‘~와 함께 옮겨졌다’는 뜻으로 대체의 의미가 없다.
B: Yes, please. I’d like to get this prescription filled.
A: Please have a seat.
B: Thank you.
A: Ok, Mr. Lopez. Your medicine is ready.
B: How often should I take this?
A: You should take one pill twice a day.
B: Are there any side-effects?
A: __________
B: Thank you!
빈칸에는 “It might make you sleepy, so no driving after taking it.”(졸릴 수 있으니 복용 후 운전은 하지 마세요)가 알맞다.
빈칸 직전에 B가 “Are there any side-effects?”(부작용이 있나요?)
- “Take this pill with plenty of water.”
- “These cough drops will help you.”
- “Take it first thing in the morning.”
어법상 옳지 않은 문장은 “It is not you but he that are responsible for it.”이다.
“not A but B”는 주어-동사 수일치에서 B에 맞춘다. It is ~ that 강조 구문으로 강조된 주어의 핵심이 he이므로 are를 is로 고쳐야 한다.
- “A drowning man will ask for help.”
- “I’m going to a party tomorrow night.”
- “I wish I were a bit taller.”
어법상 옳지 않은 문장은 “I wrote passionate letters of love to him with an intensity for which I never knew before.”
전치사 for를 빼고 “an intensity which I never knew before”로 고쳐야 한다.
- “He went out, with his dog following behind.”
- “Little did he know that so many things would change.”
- “I became so wrapped up in myself that I could not see what was really going on.”은 so ~ that 구문과 명사절 what을 바르게 쓴 문장이다.
B: Not yet, but I’m leaving work soon.
B: You’ve been a good neighbor for years.
B: Yes. I’m looking for a special souvenir.
B: This is Mark Simpson’s latest novel. It’s so interesting.
가장 어색한 대화는 “I heard you recently moved to our neighborhood.”에 “You’ve been a good neighbor for years.”
A는 B가 “recently”(최근에) 이사 왔다고 말하는데, B는 상대가 “for years”(수년간) 좋은 이웃이었다고 답해 내용이 맞지 않는다.
- “Are you on your way home?”에 “Not yet, but I’m leaving work soon.”
- “Is there anything I can help you find?”에 “I’m looking for a special souvenir.”
- “What are you reading?”에 “This is Mark Simpson’s latest novel.”
→ It consists ten elements.
→ He woke up lately this morning.
→ They asked me a lot of questions, most of what I couldn’t answer.
→ We must provide our students with effective ways to develop themselves.
바르게 옮긴 문장은 “We must provide our students with effective ways to develop themselves.”이다.
“provide A with B”(A에게 B를 제공하다) 구문이 옳고, to develop가 ways를 수식하며, 재귀대명사 themselves는 의미상 주어 students를 가리킨다.
- “It consists ten elements.”
- “He woke up lately this morning.”
- “most of what I couldn’t answer”는 what이 선행사를 받을 수 없으므로 관계대명사 which를 써서 “most of which I couldn’t answer”로 고쳐야 한다.
→ He is not enough kind to help me.
→ About three hundred people live in that island.
→ I take it for granted that everybody will agree.
→ Who do you think will win the gold medal?
잘못 옮긴 문장은 “He is not enough kind to help me.”이다.
부사 enough는 형용사를 뒤에서 수식하므로 어순을 바꿔 “He is not kind enough to help me.”
- “About three hundred people live in that island.”
- “I take it for granted that everybody will agree.”는 가목적어 it과 진목적어 that절을 쓴 take it for granted 구문으로 옳다.
- “Who do you think will win the gold medal?”
It has been our pleasure to have held a sustaining membership in the Rolling Meadow Theater Guild for the past ten years. We have enjoyed attending all of the shows, concerts, and other special events during that time, and it was very nice to have a seat we could call our own. However, I am afraid that we will not be renewing our membership for next year. We are living on a fixed income and our expenses keep rising. Please understand that the Theater Guild was one of the last things we wanted to cut from our budget. I expect we will continue to attend selected events at the theater, and I hope we will eventually be able to once again become a sustaining member.
Regards,
Liza Proctor
필자는 “we will not be renewing our membership for next year”(내년에는 회원권을 갱신하지 않을 것입니다)라고 밝히고, 고정 수입과 늘어나는 지출을 이유로 든다.
지문의 ““Black Tuesday” is the day that the stock market crashed”와 그대로 일치한다.
- New Deal을 약속한 사람은 Hoover가 아니라 “Franklin Delano Roosevelt”이다.
- “The end to the Great Depression came about in 1941 with America’s entry into World War II”
지문에 “there were not yet any telescopes”(아직 망원경이 없었다)라고 나오며, 그의 도구는 각도와 달의 위상을 재는 데 쓰였다.
- 10살 때 아버지가 돌아가셨다는 내용은 “His father died when Nicholas was ten years old”와 일치한다.
- 대성당 일자리로 안정적 수입을 얻었다는 내용은 “a job at the cathedral”과 “a secure income”에 나온다.
- 지붕 없는 탑을 지었다는 내용은 “He built a roofless tower”와 일치한다.
지문에 장서가 “ranging from chemistry textbooks to children’s classics”(화학 교과서부터 아동 고전까지)라고 나오므로 아동 고전만 모은 것이 아니다.
- 독서의 기회를 제공했다는 내용은 “brought the gift of reading to thousands of Colombian children”과 일치한다.
- 부유한 동네에서 쓰레기 트럭을 몰았다는 내용은 “driving a garbage truck at night through the country’s wealthier neighborhoods”와 일치한다.
- 소득 수준이 낮은 동네에 산다는 내용은 “low-income neighborhoods such as his”에서 확인된다.
흐름상 어색한 문장은 “Exercising in the morning just doesn’t feel right for you because, when you wake up, your muscles feel tight.”이다.
글의 주제는 “Your best time to work out is in the morning.”(운동하기 가장 좋은 때는 아침이다)인데, 이 문장만 아침 운동이 맞지 않는다고 말한다.
- “Research suggests that those who exercise in the morning tend to be more consistent …”
- “The idea is you’ll get your workout in before any other events or distractions of the day interfere …”
- “People who exercise earlier in the day generally find they can manage their time better …”
주어진 문장은 “Their involvement is vital …” 문장 뒤, “Our activities have destroyed …”
- “including apples and tomatoes” 뒤에 넣으면 벌의 중요성을 말하는 “Their involvement is vital …”
- “Our activities have destroyed …”
- “We have also inadvertently introduced …”
필자는 복잡한 정보의 암기가 “not a waste of effort”(노력의 낭비가 아니다)라고 하고, “It is a mistake to assume that creativity and rote learning are incompatible.”(창의성과 기계적 반복학습이 양립할 수 없다고 가정하는 것은 잘못이다)라고 강조한다.
- “memorization as a waste of effort”(노력의 낭비로서의 암기)는 지문의 “not a waste of effort”와 정면으로 어긋난다.
글의 제목은 “What Is the Biological Basis of Consciousness?”(의식의 생물학적 기반은 무엇인가?)
과학자들은 “consciousness arises from the properties and the organization of neurons in the brain”(의식은 뇌 신경세포의 특성과 조직에서 생겨난다)이라는 관점을 제시하며 이를 밝히는 실험을 소개한다.
- “The Cost of Experimental Work”(실험 연구의 비용)는 글에서 비용을 다루지 않으므로 맞지 않는다.
- “How Is Brain Different from Intelligence?”(뇌는 지능과 어떻게 다른가?)
빈칸에는 “Failing in order to win”(이기기 위해 실패하기)이 들어가야 한다.
Cy Young은 최다승 투수이면서 최다패 투수였고, 글은 “So get used to losing if you want to win.”(이기고 싶다면 지는 데 익숙해져라)으로 마무리된다.
빈칸에는 “been very successful in later life”(이후의 삶에서 크게 성공했다)가 들어가야 한다.
글은 학교 성적이 나쁜 사람들을 격려하며 “The greatest minds do not necessarily develop at young age.”(가장 위대한 지성이 반드시 어린 나이에 발달하는 것은 아니다)라고 말한다.
- “continued to struggle in later school life”(이후 학교생활에서도 계속 고전했다)는 격려의 근거가 될 수 없다.
- “hardly done anything great in life”(인생에서 위대한 일을 거의 하지 못했다)는 낙담하지 말라는 논지와 반대된다.
- “lived a humble and simple life”(겸손하고 소박한 삶을 살았다)는 계속 노력하라는 이유로 이어지지 않는다.
