A: I just received a letter from one of my old high school buddies.
B: That's nice!
A: Well, actually it's been a long time since I heard from him.
B: To be honest, I've been out of touch with most of my old friends.
A: I know. It's really hard to maintain contact when people move around so much.
B: You're right. __________. But you're lucky to be back in touch with your buddy again.
A가 "It's really hard to maintain contact when people move around so much"(사람들이 이리저리 많이 옮겨 다니면 연락을 유지하기가 정말 어렵다)라고 하자 B가 동의하며, 뒤이어 "But you're lucky to be back in touch"(하지만 다시 연락이 닿다니 넌 운이 좋다)로 대조하므로 빈칸은 연락이 끊기는 것이 자연스럽다는 내용이어야 한다.
- "The days are getting longer"(낮이 길어지고 있어)는 대화와 무관하다.
- "That's the funniest thing I've ever heard of"(그건 내가 들어 본 것 중 가장 웃긴 이야기야)는 공감의 맥락에 맞지 않는다.
- "I start fuming whenever I hear his name"(그의 이름만 들으면 화가 치밀어)은 친구와 멀어진 상황에 대한 동의가 아니다.
A: What are you getting Ted for his birthday? I'm getting him a couple of baseball caps.
B: I've been __________ trying to think of just the right gift. I don't have an inkling of what he needs.
A: Why don't you get him an album? He has a lot of photos.
B: That sounds perfect! Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for the suggestion!
B는 빈칸 뒤에서 "trying to think of just the right gift"(꼭 맞는 선물을 생각해 내려고 애쓰며)라고 하고 "I don't have an inkling of what he needs"(그에게 뭐가 필요한지 전혀 모르겠어)라고 덧붙이므로, 선물을 고심하고 있다는 표현이 와야 한다.
- "collecting photo albums"(사진 앨범을 수집하는)는 뒤에서 앨범을 처음 제안받고 "Why didn't I think of that?"
Some of the newest laws authorize people to appoint a surrogate who can make medical decisions for them when necessary.
A: He thinks he can achieve anything.
B: Yes, he needs to keep his feet on the ground.
밑줄 친 "keep his feet on the ground"(현실 감각을 유지하다)와 의미가 가장 가까운 것은 "remain sensible and realistic about life"(삶에 대해 분별 있고 현실적인 태도를 유지하다)이다.
- "live in a world of his own"(자기만의 세계에 살다)은 오히려 현실 감각이 없다는 뜻이다.
She is on the fence about going to see the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum.
어법상 틀린 문장은 "Academic knowledge isn't always that leads you to make right decisions." 선행사가 없으므로 관계대명사 what을 써서 "isn't always what leads you …"
관계대명사 what vs that: that은 앞에 선행사가 있어야 하지만, what은 선행사를 포함해(= the thing which) 명사절을 이끈다.
- "just eating a lot of vegetables will keep you perfectly healthy" — 동명사구 주어는 단수 취급이고, keep + 목적어 + 형용사 보어(healthy) 구조로 옳다.
- "The fear of getting hurt didn't prevent him from engaging in …" — prevent A from -ing(A가 ~하지 못하게 하다) 구문과 수동형 동명사 getting hurt가 옳다.
- "Julie's doctor told her to stop eating so many processed foods."
어법상 옳은 문장은 "Included in this series is "The Enchanted Horse," …"
원래 어순은 "The Enchanted Horse" is included in this series이며, 보어(Included in this series)를 강조해 앞으로 보내면 주어와 동사가 도치된다.
- "many forms of life that has not yet been discovered" — 관계대명사 that의 선행사가 복수 forms이므로 주어-동사 수일치에 따라 have not yet been discovered로 고쳐야 한다.
- "so distant to be seen from Earth without a telescope" — "너무 ~해서 …할 수 없다"는 too ~ to 구문이므로 too distant to be seen(또는 so distant that they cannot be seen)으로 고쳐야 한다.
- "has been protected Egypt from the famines" — 뒤에 목적어 Egypt가 있으므로 수동태가 아닌 능동태 현재완료 has protected로 고쳐야 한다.
Soils of farmlands used for growing crops are being carried away by water and wind erosion at rates between 10 and 40 times the rates of soil formation, and between 500 and 10,000 times soil erosion rates on forested land. Because those soil erosion rates are so much higher than soil formation rates, that means a net loss of soil. For instance, about half of the top soil of Iowa, the state whose agriculture productivity is among the highest in the U.S., has been eroded in the last 150 years. On my most recent visit to Iowa, my hosts showed me a churchyard offering a dramatically visible example of those soil losses. A church was built there in the middle of farmland during the 19th century and has been maintained continuously as a church ever since, while the land around it was being farmed. As a result of soil being eroded much more rapidly from fields than from the churchyard, the yard now stands like a little island raised 10 feet above the surrounding sea of farmland.
글의 내용과 일치하는 것은 "A churchyard in Iowa is higher than the surrounding farmland."(아이오와의 한 교회 마당은 주변 농지보다 높다)이다.
마지막 문장에서 농지의 흙이 훨씬 빨리 침식되어 "the yard now stands like a little island raised 10 feet above the surrounding sea of farmland"(그 마당은 이제 주변 농지보다 10피트 솟은 작은 섬처럼 서 있다)라고 한다.
- "Iowa's agricultural productivity has accelerated its soil formation."
- "The rate of soil formation in farmlands is faster than that of soil erosion."
- "Iowa has maintained its top soil in the last 150 years."는 "about half of the top soil of Iowa ... has been eroded in the last 150 years"(지난 150년간 표토의 약 절반이 침식됨)와 어긋난다.
Whether you've been traveling, focusing on your family, or going through a busy season at work, 14 days out of the gym takes its toll—not just on your muscles, but your performance, brain, and sleep, too. ① Most experts agree that after two weeks, you're in trouble if you don't get back in the gym. "At the two week point without exercising, there are a multitude of physiological markers that naturally reveal a reduction of fitness level," says Scott Weiss, a New York-based exercise physiologist and trainer who works with elite athletes. ② After all, despite all of its abilities, the human body (even the fit human body) is a very sensitive system and physiological changes (muscle strength or a greater aerobic base) that come about through training will simply disappear if your training load dwindles, he notes. Since the demand of training isn't present, your body simply slinks back toward baseline. ③ More protein is required to build more muscles at a rapid pace in your body. ④ Of course, how much and how quickly you'll decondition depends on a slew of factors like how fit you are, your age, and how long sweating has been a habit. "Two to eight months of not exercising at all will reduce your fitness level to as if you never exercised before," Weiss notes.
글의 흐름상 어색한 문장은 "More protein is required to build more muscles at a rapid pace in your body."(몸에서 근육을 빠르게 더 만들려면 단백질이 더 필요하다)이다.
- "Most experts agree that after two weeks, you're in trouble if you don't get back in the gym."
- "After all, despite all of its abilities, the human body ... will simply disappear if your training load dwindles"
- "Of course, how much and how quickly you'll decondition depends on a slew of factors"는 체력 저하의 정도가 개인 요인에 따라 다르다는 내용으로 뒤의 Weiss 인용과 연결된다.
Before the fifteenth century, all four characteristics of the witch (night flying, secret meetings, harmful magic, and the devil's pact) were ascribed individually or in limited combination by the church to its adversaries, including Templars, heretics, learned magicians, and other dissident groups. Folk beliefs about the supernatural emerged in peasant confessions during witch trials. The most striking difference between popular and learned notions of witchcraft lay in the folk belief that the witch had innate supernatural powers not derived from the devil. For learned men, this bordered on heresy. Supernatural powers were never human in origin, nor could witches derive their craft from the tradition of learned magic, which required a scholarly training at the university, a masculine preserve at the time. A witch's power necessarily came from the pact she made with the devil.
글의 내용과 일치하지 않는 것은 "Learned men believed that the witch's power came from a scholarly training at the university."(학자들은 마녀의 힘이 대학의 학문적 수련에서 나온다고 믿었다)이다.
지문은 마녀들이 "the tradition of learned magic, which required a scholarly training at the university"에서 힘을 얻을 수도 없었다고 하며, 학자들에게 마녀의 힘은 "necessarily came from the pact she made with the devil"(반드시 악마와 맺은 계약에서 나왔다)이라고 한다.
- "The folk and learned men had different views on the source of the witch's supernatural powers."
- "According to the folk belief, supernatural powers belonged to the essential nature of the witch."는 "innate supernatural powers not derived from the devil"(악마에게서 온 것이 아닌 타고난 초자연적 힘)과 일치한다.
- "Four characteristics of the witch were attributed by the church to its dissident groups."
| Fortunately, however, the heavy supper she had eaten caused her to become tired and ready to fall asleep. |
주어진 문장은 "I dreaded lest she should talk till it was all burnt out." 뒤, "She was already snoring" 앞에 들어가는 것이 가장 적절하다.
- "I had to sit with the girls during their hour of study."
- "Afterwards I ate with the other teachers."
- "There still remained an inch of candle."
Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did not, a child would burn himself again and again, because fear would not warn him to keep away from the fire that had burnt him before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier, because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which human beings and animals might soon die out.
글은 공포와 고통이 "two of the most useful things"(가장 유용한 두 가지)이며, 결론에서 "two guards without which human beings and animals might soon die out"(그것이 없으면 인간과 동물이 곧 멸종할 수도 있는 두 보호자)이라고 강조한다.
- "Obscurity of Fear and Pain in Soldiers"(군인에게서 공포와 고통의 모호함)는 군인 사례를 예시로 든 것일 뿐 글의 중심이 아니다.
- "Disapproval of Fear and Pain"(공포와 고통에 대한 반대)은 글의 긍정적 평가와 반대이다.
- "Children's Association with Fear and Pain"(아이들과 공포·고통의 연관)은 불의 예시에 한정된 내용이다.
→ I made it a rule to call him two or three times a month.
→ He grabbed me by the arm and asked for help.
→ Owing to the heavy rain, the river has risen by 120cm.
→ I prefer to staying home than to going out on a snowy day.
잘못 옮긴 것은 "I prefer to staying home than to going out on a snowy day."이다. prefer는 prefer A to B(동명사) 또는 prefer to V rather than (to) V 형태로 써야 한다.
올바른 형태는 "I prefer staying home to going out on a snowy day." 또는 "I prefer to stay home rather than (to) go out on a snowy day."이다. prefer 뒤 to는 목적어 to부정사의 to이므로 동명사를 이을 수 없고, 비교 대상은 than이 아니라 전치사 to로 연결한다.
- "I made it a rule to call him …" — make it a rule to V(~하는 것을 규칙으로 삼다)는 가목적어 it 구문으로 옳다.
- "He grabbed me by the arm" — 신체 접촉 동사 + 사람 목적어 + 전치사 + the + 신체 부위 구문으로 옳다.
- "Owing to the heavy rain, the river has risen by 120cm."
→ It was not her refusal but her rudeness that perplexed him.
→ Parents cannot be too careful about their words and actions before their children.
→ More doctors were required to tend sick and wounded.
→ To make matters worse, there is a report that another typhoon will arrive soon.
잘못 옮긴 것은 "More doctors were required to tend sick and wounded." "환자들과 부상자들"은 the + 형용사(= 복수 보통명사)로 나타내야 하므로 the sick and wounded로 고쳐야 한다.
정관사 the를 붙여 the sick(아픈 사람들), the wounded(부상당한 사람들)처럼 써야 tend(돌보다)의 목적어가 된다.
- "It was not her refusal but her rudeness that perplexed him." — It ~ that 강조구문과 not A but B(A가 아니라 B)가 결합된 옳은 영작이다.
- "Parents cannot be too careful about …"
- "To make matters worse, there is a report that another typhoon will arrive soon." — to make matters worse(설상가상으로)와 동격의 that절이 옳다.
Our main dish did not have much flavor, but I made it more __________ by adding condiments.
"주요리에 맛이 별로 없었지만 조미료를 더해서 더 맛있게 만들었다"는 흐름으로, "did not have much flavor"(맛이 별로 없었다)와 "by adding condiments"(조미료를 넣어서)가 단서이다.
London taxi drivers have to undertake years of intense training known as "the knowledge" to gain their operating license, including learning the layout of over twenty-five thousand of the city's streets. A researcher and her team investigated the taxi drivers and the ordinary people. The two groups were asked to watch videos of routes unfamiliar to them through a town in Ireland. They were then asked to take a test about the video that included sketching out routes, identifying landmarks, and estimating distances between places. Both groups did well on much of the test, but the taxi drivers did significantly better on identifying new routes. This result suggests that the taxi drivers' mastery can be __________ to new and unknown areas. Their years of training and learning through deliberate practice prepare them to take on similar challenges even in places they do not know well or at all.
- "devoted"(헌신한)는 "to new and unknown areas"와 의미상 맞지 않는다.
| I remember the day Lewis discovered the falls. They left their camp at sunrise and a few hours later they came upon a beautiful plain and on the plain were more buffalo than they had ever seen before in one place. |
(B) After a while the sound was tremendous and they were at the great falls of the Missouri River. It was about noon when they got there.
(C) They kept on going until they heard the faraway sound of a waterfall and saw a distant column of spray rising and disappearing. They followed the sound as it got louder and louder.
(C)의 "They kept on going until they heard the faraway sound of a waterfall"(폭포의 먼 소리를 들을 때까지 계속 갔다)이 이어지고, (B)의 "After a while the sound was tremendous"(얼마 후 소리가 엄청났고)와 "about noon"(정오쯤) 도착이 뒤따르며, 마지막으로 (A)의 "that afternoon"(그날 오후) 폭포 아래 낚시가 온다.
Novelty-induced time expansion is a well-characterized phenomenon which can be investigated under laboratory conditions. Simply asking people to estimate the length of time they are exposed to a train of stimuli shows that novel stimuli simply seem to last longer than repetitive or unremarkable ones. In fact, just being the first stimulus in a moderately repetitive series appears to be sufficient to induce subjective time expansion. Of course, it is easy to think of reasons why our brain has evolved to work like this-presumably novel and exotic stimuli require more thought and consideration than familiar ones, so it makes sense for the brain to allocate them more subjective time.
글의 요지로 가장 적절한 것은 "New stimuli give rise to subjective time expansion."(새로운 자극은 주관적 시간 확장을 일으킨다)이다.
글은 "novel stimuli simply seem to last longer than repetitive or unremarkable ones"(새로운 자극은 반복적이거나 평범한 자극보다 더 오래 지속되는 것처럼 보인다)라고 하고, 뇌가 새로운 자극에 더 많은 주관적 시간을 할당한다고 설명한다.
- "Response to stimuli is an important by-product of brain training."
- "The intensity of stimuli increases with their repetition."
- "Our physical response to stimuli influences our thoughts."
One of the tricks our mind plays is to highlight evidence which confirms what we already believe. If we hear gossip about a rival, we tend to think "I knew he was a nasty piece of work"; if we hear the same about our best friend, we're more likely to say "that's just a rumour." Once you learn about this mental habit—called confirmation bias—you start seeing it everywhere. This matters when we want to make better decisions. Confirmation bias is OK as long as we're right, but all too often we're wrong, and we only pay attention to the deciding evidence when it's too late. How __________ depends on our awareness of why, psychologically, confirmation bias happens. There are two possible reasons. One is that we have a blind spot in our imagination and the other is we fail to ask questions about new information.
빈칸에는 "we can protect our decisions from confirmation bias"(우리가 결정을 확증 편향으로부터 어떻게 보호할 수 있는지)가 가장 적절하다.
- "we make our rivals believe us"(경쟁자가 우리를 믿게 만드는 것)는 결정의 질과 무관하다.
- "our blind spot helps us make better decisions"(맹점이 더 나은 결정을 돕는 것)는 맹점을 편향의 원인으로 든 내용과 반대이다.
- "we develop exactly the same bias"(똑같은 편향을 갖게 되는 것)는 편향의 원인을 인식하는 목적과 맞지 않는다.
For many big names in consumer product brands, exporting and producing overseas with local labor and for local tastes have been the right thing to do. In doing so, the companies found a way to improve their cost structure, to grow in the rapidly expanding consumer markets in emerging countries. But, Sweets Co. remains stuck in the domestic market. Even though its products are loaded with preservatives, which means they can endure long travel to distant markets, Sweets Co. __________, let alone produce overseas. The unwillingness or inability to update its business strategy and products for a changing world is clearly damaging to the company.
빈칸에는 "does very little exporting"(수출을 거의 하지 않는다)이 가장 적절하다.
